The fifth mainline entry in Gearbox Software’s Borderlands franchise, known as the father of the looter shooter genre, ‘Borderlands 4,’ has become the top-selling paid game globally on Steam, as per SteamDB, a few days ahead of its global launch.

Sitting at the number two spot in Steam’s global top-selling games list, Borderlands 4 is only behind Valve’s free-to-play tactical FPS, Counter-Strike 2.
That being said, Borderlands 4 is also one of the only upcoming games that has managed to stay in the top 10 best-selling games list on Steam.
While Gearbox and 2K have been on a spending spree to market the game ahead of its Sep 11 PC global release, followed by a PS5 and Xbox Series X | S release on Sep 12, with an Oct 3rd release on Switch 2, the game’s new ‘open world’ non restrictive approach, QoL changes and the transparency and the devs listening to the feedback from the community has also been a major factor in bringing up the sales.
And yes, while the game has some shortcomings when it comes to performance and a few other areas, there is no denying that Borderlands 4 is shaping up to be one of the best Borderlands games, with the potential to dethrone Borderlands 2 as the best game in the franchise.
Based on my current projections, Borderlands 4 will hit 150k+ concurrent players on Steam on launch day, with the numbers increasing during the first weekend.
